SELF-RESPECT: August’s Tang Soo Do Character Trait

August is about self-respect. Self-respect means valuing yourself enough to make good choices, take responsibility for your actions, and continually strive to become your best. It is shown by the way you think, the effort you give, and the standards you hold yourself to every day.

At Starworld Martial Arts Academy, self-respect begins from within. Students who respect themselves train with purpose, listen with humility, accept correction, practice with discipline, and care for themselves and those around them.

When you respect yourself, you naturally earn the respect of others.

Black Belts understand that leadership begins by leading themselves first.

Week 1 – Purpose of Training (#1)

Self-respect begins by understanding why we train. Martial arts is about far more than learning kicks and punches. Every class is an opportunity to improve physically, mentally, emotionally, and morally.

Students who respect themselves train with purpose instead of simply going through the motions.

Train with purpose. Grow with purpose. Live with purpose.

Week 2 – Serious Approach (#2)

People who respect themselves take their goals seriously. Students learn that success requires focus, preparation, and a positive attitude every time they step onto the training floor.

Giving your full attention shows respect for your instructor, your classmates, and yourself.

Serious effort produces serious results.

Week 3 – All Out Effort (#3)

Self-respect means always giving your best effort. Students learn that success is measured by commitment, not perfection. Black Belts don’t quit when training becomes difficult—they continue working to improve.

Your greatest competition is the person you were yesterday.

Give your best… every class… every day.

Week 4 – Always Listen and Follow the Direction… (#7)

Listening is a sign of maturity and self-respect. Students who accept coaching, ask questions, and apply corrections grow faster than those who think they already know everything.

Respecting instruction demonstrates humility, discipline, and a desire to improve.

Great students are great listeners.

Week 5 – Cleanliness is Required After Training… (#14)

Self-respect includes taking pride in your appearance, your uniform, your equipment, and your training environment. Students learn that caring for themselves and respecting the dojang reflects the discipline of a true martial artist.

Clean habits build disciplined lives.

Respect yourself. Respect your dojang. Respect your community.

Closing Message

Throughout August, students will discover that Self Respect is one of the foundations of becoming a Black Belt Leader.

It means training with purpose.

It means giving your best effort.

It means listening with humility.

It means taking pride in yourself and your surroundings.

At Starworld Martial Arts Academy, students do more than learn martial arts—they develop the confidence, discipline, and character to lead themselves before leading others.

Because self-respect builds discipline, discipline builds confidence, and confidence builds Black Belts.

Tang Soo!
